Girl Talk Thursday - Twilight

Maria at Mommy Melee is starting up a new thing called Girl Talk Thursday. This week the topic is Twilight, love it or hate it? and OH MY GOD I HAVE OPINIONS. Conflicted, girly opinions.

I've blogged about the Twilight series before. HERE'S THE THING. I've read the first two in the series. After that I stopped, and well, like I said, here's the thing. They aren't good books. They're so angsty and full of blah and there's NO SEX and it's just Bella and Edward sitting around talking about how much they love each other and dude, he watches her while she sleeeps. And...everybody's okay with this?!? Plus I think Jacob Black is TOTALLY hotter both literally AND figuratively. I mean, I don't want to get it on with a 108-year-old virgin who feels like an unforgiving block of ice. Do you think his you-know-what is like an ice spear or something?

That said, I totally read the first two books in a three day period, and was 100% enraptured and entertained. I think if I hadn't taken the break I would have been happy to read all four, and I probably would have been just as engrossed for all of them. They're 100% compelling. I was totally a weepy mess for at least HALF of New Moon, and I even read the online version of Twilight through Edward's eyes, which Glamour Girl turned me on to. I can't lie. Pure entertainment. It's just that if you step away for a moment, you sort of remember that you're not 13, and the lack of sex leaves you frustrated that you need to lock yourself in the bathroom and take a nice hot shower, stat.

Didn't see the movie because going to the movies is not a part of my life. Not that I'm opposed, just that I never get a chance. And I have a hard time imagining how they would do a good job of captivating me, when I can't even put my finger on why the books were so captivating.

So. Love-Hate relationship, that's my answer.

  1. I am halfway through #3. I only got halfway because I got burned out. Book #2 sucked balls with the whining and moaning. The only good stuff happened at the end. The author just goes on and on and on. I like the movie better than the book. Even though there was no sex it did an awesome job showing some hot sexual tension. Gave me chills.

  2. yeah... I had not ever heard of the books, and I have only seen the previews for the movie ... not sure it is my thing.

  3. I watched the movie last night...it was alright..eh the makeup jobs sucked. The girl who played Bella was suck tas tic, but other than that it was ok. Read all 4 books (There is sex in one of them BTW not to ruin it or anything). Books are always better than the movies. I am still pissed off about the Harry Potter movies, but I still watch them every single time they are on TV, can't help it.

  4. I do agree that Bella was stiff and kinda boring in the movie. I am a firm believer that books are always better than the movies but no tin this case. While reading the books I kept saying, "Okay, I get it let's move on!"

  5. The movie BLOWS....that being said, yeah. I bought it. Sigh.

The lack of sex is REALLY annoying. Like, I was PISSED. But they are entertaining. I have them in my 'fluff' category. When I finish a book that leaves my brain cells stinging (like Riddley Walker...O-M-G!) I need something like this series to just mellow out the brain waves a little before the next mind-eff book.

Uhm, there are these....stories....that you might like. It's smut....like, porno smut....but it's also kind of cool if you need Bella and Edward to 'do it'.

Lord, forgive me for what I'm about to post.....

  6. But you can't exactly ADD sex and still have it be Twilight, can you? I mean, the whole thing is just an awful abstinence parable written by a Mormon housewife. *blech*.

And no, I haven't read that shit. I just can't seem to avoid discussion of it.

  7. Yeah I also stopped after the first two. I just lost momentum and realized I wasn't that interested anymore. And I actually think it's really funny when people say that the movie sucked because the movie is, essentially, EXACTLY THE SAME as the book. The only changes they made were to speed the fucking plot up. I'm not sure what people were hoping for when 3/4 of the book involves Edward and Bella sitting around and talking about their undying love for each other. Oh, and also? What's with all the talk in the second book about suicide? I don't want young, impressionable 13 year olds reading all that "if you died I would go kill myself" garbage and thinking it's okay....

  8. And this is from Her Bad Mother at MamaPop, I just had to share: http://www.mamapop.com/mamapop/2009/03/in-which-i-fina.html

  9. Oh once you can see the movie I'll be really interested to see what you think. Because I enjoyed the books (the first the most) and I really enjoyed the movie a lot.

Jacob IS adorable but he's kind of a dick in ways they don't address. Sort of like Bella is a horrible tease in the second book and they don't address that.

I agree that it's an abstinence parable. But I think that blew up and most people don't get it, which is fine with me LOL.

Thank you so much for playing!
